In Pembroke, Ontario, new parking spots outside the OPP station at 77 International Dr. now feature a handshake symbol, marking them as community safety zones for online transactions. These designated areas are part of Project Safe Trade, an initiative to encourage safer in-person exchanges of online purchases. The zones aim to move transactions from private locations to public spaces, offering a secure environment for buyers and sellers.
The spaces are open 24/7, with no appointment necessary. This launch comes just in time for the busy season, as online transactions increase. According to the Upper Ottawa Valley OPP, this initiative is designed to reduce crimes related to online marketplace exchanges and prevent fraud.
While police won’t mediate transactions, they will intervene in criminal cases if necessary. For added security, it’s recommended to meet in busy public spaces, bring a trusted friend, and ensure transactions are conducted during daylight hours.
Technology analyst Carmi Levy advises buyers to research sellers and inspect items carefully before completing a purchase.
