Severe storms struck the U.S. on April 2, spawning tornadoes across at least five states, including Arkansas, Oklahoma, Indiana, Missouri, and Illinois. One of the most powerful tornadoes hit Lake City, Arkansas, causing significant damage but thankfully no immediate injuries. Storm chasers captured dramatic footage of several tornadoes, with meteorologists referring to them as “monsters.”
In Indiana, Missouri, and Illinois, tornadoes damaged homes, warehouses, and infrastructure, prompting urgent emergency warnings. The National Weather Service (NWS) issued alerts about life-threatening flash floods in the Ohio Valley and Mid-South, while a High Risk (Level 5) warning was in place for additional tornado outbreaks. The severe weather stretched across the Midwest and Southern Plains, with forecasts predicting more storms, as well as heavy snowfall in the North.
This storm outbreak followed a deadly system just days earlier, which claimed 18 lives across the South and Midwest. Mississippi and Alabama were hit particularly hard, with powerful EF3 tornadoes causing widespread devastation. The situation was further complicated when an earthquake struck Mississippi, hindering rescue operations. Officials are urging residents to stay vigilant as extreme weather continues to threaten the region.
